[Mailinglist] Gentoo: Unable to LOG in

  Disto: Gentoo
  Kernel : 2.6.14
 
 I am unable to log in to gentoo. On booting to
runlevel 3 i get the log in prompt.But no password
prompt appears after i enter the user name. It pauses
for some time and the login prompt reappears.

 i am able to log into the machine using ssh over the
network. But am unable to log in directly.
 
 I was installing gnome using emerge when this
happend. There were some errors and the installation
aborted. Then i had to restart the system. Later on
this happens. I haven installed X Windows.
 
Has anyone had similar problem. What could have gone
wrong? How can i repair?
