Warm Greetings To The FOSS Community,
The Meeting for the month of September was conducted successfully.
The were 20 people who attended the meeting, which was more than
last time.
The meeting started of as usual with the Proposed Agenda
"FOSS based Mobile Platforms". The presentation started of with
talking about OS on Mobile Phones and their functions.
It went on to talk about the changing face of Mobile Phones and
how smart phones will change the market trends. The audience was
bit conserved when the talk started about Smart phones and PDAs
because of the high price.
But the speaker assured them of how cheap phones would become
within a year, and how many of the attendees would have one of the
new gadgets.
Next the Speaker went on to talk about the ethical issues of
using propreitary OS on a mobile phones.
The second section described the advantages of a FOSS platform.
The next section dealt with the Industry approach to FOSS.The
challenges faced by industry was discussed and how they plan to
overcome them by using FOSS.
The discussion then switched to OpenMoko. The first truly
"Open Mobile Platform". The important aspects of OpenMoko were
explained.
Also a presentation by Sean Pultz, open moko founder which was
shown at "open source in mobile conference" was shown.
The meeting concluded with discussions on consumer choices with
regard to Mobile Phone OS.
Everyone agreed on the fact that sometime in the future they will
come across the situation where a choice will have to be made
for a MObile phone OS, just like they will have to for a PC.
Then during the usual tea break, we had the customary self introduction.
People talked about how they started using FOSS and what are their plans.
One person talked about his GIS project using Grass and another talked
about his ideas for an embedded systems project on GNU/Linux.
Although the second session planned was a GNU/Solaris Installation,
the plan was changed, because the concerned person could not attend the
meeting due to serious health problems.
After the tea break the second session conducted was a Python Class by
Balakrishnan Sir.
It was a continuation of the class taken at the last month's meeting.
The class started with an introduction to programming, for the non developer
audience and a summary of the previous class, then it went on to explain
several components of the Python framework including Visual Python, tkinter,
pyqt etc..using examples. Integrated Development Environments(IDEs) for
application development using Python was demonstrated. The class was quite
interesting as always.
The meeting concluded with the attendees providing their feedback.
