There are many ways by which you can start writing in Malayalam.
Simplest way would be to use Malayalam
<http://download.savannah.nongnu.org/releases/smc/Swanalekha/> tables for
SCIM.

A group called Swatanthra Malayalam Computing
<http://fci.wikia.com/wiki/SMC>  has been working and 
releasing tools for this purpose.
