Hi,
In addition to what Unni recommends you can also try this if it still does not work.
After logging in to the console via Ctrl + Alt + F1 run the command
#Xorg -configure
Observer the last few lines that come as output to know if it
did everything properly. If everything went fine you will get a
file in /root/xorg.conf.new(expecting you run this command as root)
To test if this file will work with the X server you can issue the command
#X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
If X works fine you can copy this as /etc/X11/xorg.conf and use to start X.
